April 18, 2023 Representative Summer Lee 243 Cannon House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Dear Representative Lee, I am writing to you to because dramatic legislation is necessary to correct the epidemic of gun violence in our country. There have been 165 mass shootings - four or more victims - in our country to date this year. I urge your support for stronger gun laws including any - or all - of the following: A background check must be conducted before the sale of any firearm as part of a national system of enforcement, The sale of military style weapons to civilians must be banned nationally and their import prohibited, Red flag laws must be enacted to permit firearms to be taken from a person identified as a danger to him or her self or to others, Regulations must require the safe storage of firearms and that a lost or stolen firearm be reported, and A permit must be required to carry a firearm in public. Shootings are a very real experience in your Congressional district. I live just a few blocks from the Tree of Life Synagogue where 11 people were killed and six wounded on October 27, 2018. A year ago two were killed and nine others wounded on the Northside. In 2016, six people were killed and three others injured in a mass shooting at a suburban house in Wilkinsburg. Yes, changes at the state level are also helpful. But national legislation will prevent possible evasion of laws by crossing state lines. Your community needs your help desperately, and your legislative support would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Your name Your address
