Text: Calculus - Early Transcendentals
4th Edition - James Stewart
Brooks Cole - Publisher
Note to Students Who Own the 3rd Edition of Stewart
Bring your copy of Edition 3 to Stella Andreoletti, Wean Hall Room 6116 and she will give you a copy of Edition 4 in exchange for your copy of Edition 3. You may use Edition 4 for 21-118 and for 21-259; if you plan to take the course. When you are done with these courses, you must return Edition 4 to Ms. Andreoletti and she will give you back your copy of Edition 3. This complicated transaction will spare you buying a second text.
Organizational Details
Assignments, Reference Material Source: The course web page (URL) http://www.math.cmu.edu/users/nw0z/21118F99.html) contains office hours and other information, as well as the course syllabus. In addition, all assignments, schedules, and announcements will be posted on the web page.Homework: Homework will be assigned weekly on Mondays (on the web page and in class handouts), and turned in at the beginning of Tuesday recitations during the following week. Only the graded problems should be turned in, and of those 4-5 will be graded carefully. I strongly urge you to attempt the drill problems, some of which will be discussed in class and answered in the book. Late homework will not be accepted.
Tests: Tests will be given in lecture (and are marked in the handout). Tests will be closed book and no calculators. Makeups will only be given in case of documented illness, family emergency or documented University-sponsored trips. Permission to take a makeup has to be given by me (not your TA). You will have one week from the day the test is handed back to appeal your grade.
Grading: The final course grades will be assigned on the basis of the following computation:
Homework average 20
Test with the higher score 50%
Test with the lower score 30%
Letter grades: The highest possible grade cutoffs will be R: < 59, D: 60-69, C: 70-79, B: 80-89, A: 90-100.Cheating: Any cheating (copying from another student, giving answers to another student, or use of unauthorized material) on a test or final exam will, at minimum, result in failure on that test.
