Diagnostic Test: | Students taking this course might not have sufficient preparation for a calculus class. To find out how much revision of algebraic techniques is needed there will be a diagnostic test in the first lecture of the term. This test will not count toward your final grade but is only designed to show what has to be done in the first lectures of the term. |
Required Text: |
The text-book used in this course is the one below. Depending on the diagnostic test there will be some algebra revision in the first couple of weeks of term. No text-book is given for this part. Goldstein, Lay, Schneider: Brief Calculus and its Applications (10th Edition) (Pearson Prentice Hall) |
Grading: | Your final grade is
based on three course tests, homeworks
and a final exam. The final grade will be assigned based on the higher of following two computations: 0.2*(homework average)+0.5*(average of three course tests)+0.3*(final exam) 0.2*(homework average)+0.35 *(average of two best course tests)+0.05*(worst course test)+0.4*(final exam) The letter grades will be assigned in the following ranges: A: 89-100, B: 78-88, C: 67-77, D: 56-66, R: <55 Your homework and exam solutions must show your work (not a machine calculation) and you must justify why your answer is correct, using the ideas and methods taught in class. Answers given without explanation or justification will receive at most partial credit. |
Homework: | There will be a
homework in most weeks. It will be given in the Wednesday lecture and
will be collected at the beginning of your Thursday recitation in the following week. You are encouraged to work on your exercises in groups. However, you need to write the exercises up on your own. Copying will result in the deduction of the points achieved on your homework for all people involved. The two worst homeworks will be dropped. Every homework assignment will be graded out of 10 points. Five points will be awarded if every questions is attempted and two questions will be graded for the remaining 5 points. Answers given without explanation or justification are not counted as attempted questions. Late homework will not be accepted. Extra motivation to do your homework: Many of the problems in the course tests and the final exam will be similar to the homework problems. |
Course Tests: | There will be three course
tests held during the Monday class in weeks 5 (September 27), 9 (October 25), and 13 (November 22). None will
be dropped. The tests will be closed book and notes. Make-up Tests will not be provided unless the student documents an illness or emergency. Any conflict with university sponsored event must be brought to the attention of the lecturer before the test date for a make-up to be considered. There will be a one week limit (after the return of the graded tests) during which appeals of apparent miss-grading will be entertained. After that period the grade will not be changed. Anyone caught cheating, using a cell-phone, using other electronic devices or talking during tests and exams will receive no points on that test or exam and will be reported to the Dean of Students per University policy. A second case of cheating will result in an academic board review. In this case the penalty may be much more severe, possibly including suspension or expulsion from the university. |
Final Exam: | The final exam will be a three hour exam. Time and place of it will be announced later. |
Office Hours: | M 9-10, Th 12-1 and by appointment |
Calculators: | Calculators won't be allowed during tests and exams. |
Academic Honesty: | The university guidelines, as stated in the student handbook, will be applied to ensure academic honesty. |
Students with special needs: | Please let the lecturer know at least a week prior to each exam about any special arrangements that need to be made. |
