Here are some old notes on counting and rapid mixing. At some time, Martin Dyer, Mark Jerrum and I planned a book on the subject and this is as far as it got. There is one problem with the notes, besides their age, and that is that there are no proper references to the people whose results we have described. We had obviously planned to remedy this in the final version, but "the best laid plans ...". I offer my apologies and I hope that they will be of some use.
